Healthy Alternatives to Chips

Everyone gets hungry throughout the day in between meals.  One of my favorite things to snack on are chips.  Whether they are regular chips, sour cream and onion, BBQ, Doritos, Tostitos, or any of the others you can think of, they all are delicious.  However, it is no secret that any kind of chip is not exactly good for you.  Chips are loaded with sodium and have more grams of fat in a serving than we need in something that is just a snack.  The even bigger problem with chips is that once you start eating them, you can’t stop!  When that bag is open in front of you it is almost impossible to have self control and put it away.  Next thing you know, the entire bag is gone.  So, the question is, what can we eat as a snack in place of chips?  Here’s six delicious alternatives to chips:

1) Carrot Sticks – These veggies are delicious and you can eat them raw which is great because there is no cooking involved!  They are great on their own, or you can add some flavor by dipping them in something like light french onion dip.

2) Fruit – Any kind of fruit is good for you, and tastey too!  My favorites are apples, bananas, peaches, and strawberries.  Fruit is sweet and will satisfy your craving for a treat in a healthy way.

3) Smoothie – These are great because even though they are a drink, they are extremely filling.  You can put whatever you like into a smoothie; your favorite fruits, favorite juices, even favorite yogurt.

4) Popcorn – Most people wouldn’t think that popcorn would be a healthy snack.  However, it is much better for you thank chips.  It will satisfy that salt craving you may have, and you’ll know it’s better than snacking on chips.

5) Nuts and Seeds – These are a great snack because they are easy to nibble on.  As long as you avoid buying salted nuts, you pretty much can’t go wrong.

6) Sweet Potato –  This kind of potato is better for you, and it is deliciously sweet.  You can prepare it however you like and it’ll end up being the perfect snack.

Who doesn’t love pizza?  We all love the delicious taste that pizza provides.  Everyone has those days where we crave the taste of a warm slice (or two) of pizza.  However, the one downside to this favorite food is that it is not very healthy to eat.  The crust is fattening and there’s also a lot of cheese, which is fattening as well.  This doesn’t stop us from eating it though.  Some people may take that bite into the slice and wonder, how can I keep eating my favorite meal, but have it be a little bit healthier for me.  The link here will give you a delicious recipe on how to make healthier pizza.  And it’s not a recipe for plain pizza, it’s for the delicious specialty pizza…BBQ Chicken.

So what makes this pizza healthier than regular pizza?  The secret is in the best part…the crust.  Rather than a regular flour based crust, this recipe calls for a cauliflower based crust.  Removing the flour from the crust and replacing it with cauliflower removes over 100 calories from the final product.  In one slice of this BBQ Chicken pizza, there is only 157 calories.  The cauliflower crust adds in tons of veggies that we normally wouldn’t get if we had a regular slice of pizza.  Now we can eat two delicious slices of this healthier pizza alternative for almost half the calories of two slices of regular pizza, and who’s going to complain about that?

Who can deny that dessert is everyone’s favorite “meal” of the day?  We would be lying if we said that we all didn’t love some sweet treats.  Whether we eat them as snacks throughout the day, or solely for dessert after dinner, dessert always tastes delicious.  One of my personal favorite sweet treats is chocolate chip cookies.  They have been a favorite of mine since I was little.  Put a plate of chocolate chip cookies in front of me and I will keep eating them until I have a stomach ache.  They are definitely one of the yummiest of all the desserts!

However, there is one problem that we all face when we want to buy, and then eat, chocolate chip cookies: they have a lot of calories and they are not that good for you. In an age of people who are constantly trying to lose weight, get in shape, be healthy, and eat clean, it’s hard to find sweet treats that are “good” for you.  Now we can all relax!  This recipe is not only for regular chocolate chip cookies, but fudge chocolate chip cookies.  And get this, they are only 68 calories each!  The secret is that the cookies are flourless.  Removing the flour from the recipe cuts down the calorie count by almost half, reduces the amount of fat in the cookies, and removes the gluten from the recipe as well.  Now you can eat a delicious cookie and not feel guilty about it afterwards!
